Scuttlebutt from TJ Morgan

Marines,

I have seen a lot of work this year on the Toys for Tots drive. You have all done a great job and should be commended, I salute you!

I am on my way out the door in a couple of weeks to start my yearly travel for the Marine Corps League. First up I head to Marine West in Camp Pendleton CA. I always love to go down and support our expos and the MCL members in the SW Division. I then leave for the East coast for this year’s Midwinter conference n Fredericksburg VA. We have a lot of work to get done there. Besides the regular BOT meetings and such, I have been tasked by the National Commandant to work on and deliver recommendations for standardization of our uniforms and SOP for the Funeral detail. I will present the committee’s findings and recommendations to both the BOT and to the floor.

Next are the 2018 Department conventions. I will attend each one again this year not just so you can see my face but to pass on to you what the BOT and others are doing for you the membership of the league. I will be seeking your support for my last tour starting at the National convention in Buffalo NY, So a busy year again with a hell of a lot of travel and comradery with al l of you.

See you all very soon.

Blast From the Past

Saturday November 11th is Veterans Day and Albany will be sponsoring once again the largest Veterans Day parade west of the Mississippi. Some of you many not know this but the parade was originally sponsored by the Santiam Detachment. This year we have the honor of leading the parade with a color guard from Santiam Detachment 374. While doing some research I found this today. A blast from the past! A news article about the parade published in the Albany Democrat Herald November 9th, 2013. Guess whose picture was in the article.

Operation Awakening II the Long Patrol

Thought it is time to post an update on Tim Tuomey. GySgt John Stofiel reported in an email to me that so far Tim has raised $44,578 for the Semper Fi Fund for wounded Marines and families. That’s about 45% of his goal to raise $100,000.

He is presently south of North Palisade heading for Mt Bolton Brown on the Pacific Coast Trail still heading south to his goal, the Mexican border, almost, due east of Fresno. You can follow his progress on the Operation Awakening II website.

I was not aware that he has been doing a series of YouTube videos along the way. I discovered that today and subscribed to the series. In this video Tim expresses his appreciation of all the people who have been supporting him along the way including all the members of the Marine Corps League detachments. Oorah!

Resupply at Santiam Pass Pacific Coast Trail Access Point

"I pulled in at about 10:00 am to get ready to greet Tim Tuomey when he arrived. I had brought with me fresh cold drinks, fruit, and sandwiches. I had just set up an American flag tablecloth on the one and only picnic table there when I looked up and coming down the trail was a bearded slender man with a pack on his back. I said to him "Tim Tuomey?", he said yep! I called Mel Huffman and Tim Beach who were in Sisters just 26 miles away with their wives. Tim is here. We weren't expecting him till around 1300 hours. They arrived a little while later and shortly after that Alan Lynn and Don Schlim arrived. We kicked back and visited for awhile and listened to some interesting stories that Tim told us about some of the experiences he had along the trail. Tim needed a ride to Sisters so he could shop and upgrade some equipment he would need to continue his journey." (Jr Vice Cmdt Derral Hunt)

"Today was a fantastic day. Weather was great. Tim Beach and his wife Mariette, myself and my wife Janell departed Albany at 08:00. We thought we were going to have plenty of time to head to the RCP, check it out and then go on to Sisters Oregon for a bit of R&R (shopping). We arrived in Sisters and had approximately 30 minutes of that when Derral Hunt called and informed us that he and Tim Tuomey were at the RCP having a grand old time.

So, we quickly purchased some Subway sandwiches - and some other necessaries - and headed back to the RCP.
Upon arrival, we greeted Tim with his favorite, well almost, dessert - Apple Crumble Coffee Cake. That sucker didn’t last but about 30 seconds…
Then we began our mid-day repast of Subway sandwiches and other snacks at hand.
Alan Lynn and Don Schlim, fellow officers of the Santiam Detachment #374 were on hand and of course stories were told and other PCT hikers participated in a nice chat.
Tim wanted to go into Sisters for some pharmacy supplies, so after lunch we loaded up in the cars/trucks and headed back into Sisters. After Tim checked in to a hotel, he then joined us in the heart of Sisters for his shopping needs, followed by another nice lunch at the local saloon and about two more hours of conversation.
Great stories shared by all in attendance.
Saying goodbye, we headed back to Albany, knowing that Tim would be well “heeled” in Sisters. We wish him all the best in the coming days." (Cmdt Mel Huffman)
